How do I set up my email on my iPhone/iPad/iPod touch (built-in Mail app)?

Last updated 3 years ago
As of iOS 11.0, there was a bug that prevents messages from being sent from some Outlook accounts. If you receive the message "Cannot Send Mail. The message was rejected by the server," this is the cause. According to Apple, updating to iOS 11.0.1 or later will fix the issue. This can be found in Settings > General > Software Update.

This document will explain how to set up Franklin College email on the built-in Mail app on iOS devices (iPhones, iPads, iPod touches). The built-in app is the recommended way to access your email on these devices. Franklin College email can also be used with the Microsoft Outlook app on iOS, using instructions on another post.

Step 1: Start the process to add your account:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  • Tap "Add Account"

Step 2: Tap "Exchange" for the type of account.

Step 3: Enter your account information:

  • Enter your Franklin College email address in the Email field.
  • Enter your Franklin College password in the Password field.
  • The Description can be whatever you would like (FC Email is a good option).
  • Tap "Log In"

If your device sticks on verifying the account, you can swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to access Control Center and turning Airplane Mode on and then off. This will cause the auto-setup to 'fail' and allow you to enter in your account information manually (located in the next step).
Step 4: Advanced settings if your account doesn't automatically configure itself:

  • Enter your Franklin College email address in the Email field.
  • Enter outlook.office365.com in the Server field
  • Leave the domain field blank.
  • Enter your entire Franklin College email address in the Username field.
  • Enter your Franklin College password in the Password field.
  • The Description can be whatever you would like (FC Email is a good option).
  • Tap "Sign In"

Step 5: If everything is entered properly and your phone can connect to the server, you should briefly see checkmarks next to the settings and then have the ability to turn on and off sync for each of the functions. All items are on by default.

At this point, your phone will begin synchronizing with the server and you'll be able to access items in the built-in Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, and Notes apps. Depending on how many items are in your inbox, it may take a minute or two for your phone to download all of your items.

Problems?

If you are having trouble, try the following:
  • Make sure you have a connection to the internet - either in range of a wifi network or a strong cellular signal.
  • Make sure that you are selecting "Exchange" for the account type.
